One of our e-commerce clients was spending over $4,000/month on their technology infrastructure โ a combination of expensive hosting, premium plugins, third-party services, and developer maintenance. We helped them reduce that to under $1,600/month while improving performance.
The Problem
The client had a WooCommerce store with around 500 products. Their monthly tech spend:
- Premium managed hosting: $150/month
- 7 paid plugins: $120/month (subscriptions)
- CDN + image optimization service: $80/month
- External email marketing tool: $100/month
- Freelance developer on retainer: $3,500/month
- Total: ~$4,000/month
What We Did
1. Replaced Expensive Hosting
Moved from premium managed WordPress hosting to a LiteSpeed-powered VPS. Performance improved (TTFB dropped from 800ms to 200ms) and cost dropped from $150 to $25/month.
2. Replaced Paid Plugins with Free Alternatives
5 of the 7 paid plugins had excellent free alternatives:
- Yoast Premium โ Rank Math (free, actually more features)
- WP Rocket โ LiteSpeed Cache (free, server-level caching)
- Smush Pro โ ShortPixel free tier + WebP Converter
- WPForms Pro โ Contact Form 7 (free)
- UpdraftPlus Premium โ UpdraftPlus free + server-level backups
Savings: $90/month in plugin subscriptions.
3. Built-In CDN
Cloudflare free tier provides CDN, DDoS protection, and SSL. Replaced the $80/month CDN service.
4. Email Marketing Migration
Moved from a $100/month email tool to Brevo (formerly Sendinblue) free tier (300 emails/day) which was more than enough for their volume.
5. Replaced Freelancer with Staff Augmentation
The freelance developer was charging $3,500/month for ~20 hours of work (~$175/hr effective rate). We provided a dedicated developer at $15/hr for the same 20 hours/month: $1,200/month. Same quality, $2,300/month savings.
Results
| Expense | Before | After | Savings |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hosting | $150 | $25 | $125 |

| Email Marketing | $100 | $0 | $100 |
| Developer | $3,500 | $1,200 | $2,300 |

Annual savings: $32,340
Performance also improved: PageSpeed score went from 45 to 92, TTFB dropped 75%, and the site handled 3x more concurrent users without slowdown.
Key Takeaway
Most businesses are overpaying for technology not because they need expensive tools, but because no one has audited their stack. A free 30-minute consultation can identify thousands in potential savings.
